Audience Research

The target audience for our horror film would be aged 15+ because our protagonist is a male teenager, which means that teenagers in the audience would be able to relate to the character more, thus conforming to Blumler's personal identity theory, which states that people watch films to engage with the characters on-screen. Our film would not be suitable for people under 15, because it is a horror film and would include some scary themes, such as a creepy clown antagonist. Our film would not include any swearing, gore or nudity, which means that it would not be rated as an 18.

Our film would be aimed at males, because males typically enjoy horror film more than females. This could be because males are stereo typically thrill-seekers and so are more inclined to watch a horror film because of the buzz it gives them. In addition to this, the majority of the characters in the film, including the protagonist, is male, which means that a male audience would relate to the characters more and therefore enjoy the film more.

I think our film would be targeted towards a niche audience, due to the fact that we have a minimal budget and it is going to be set in our local area. In addition to this, our film won't feature any famous actors, so we won't be able to take advantage of a star's existing fanbase.

In terms of class, I think our film would be aimed at lower middle class, because it is set in a rural area. In addition to this, the characters are this class, therefore making it easier for the audience to relate to the characters. When referring to the Cross Cultural Consumer Characteristics model developed by Young and Rubicam, I think our film would be aimed towards mainstreamers, because 40% of the market is made up of mainstreamers, and it wouldn't appeal to aspirers, succeeders, or reformers, because the plot is quite basic and we have a minimal budget.
